Since 21 October 2026, South African businesses can buy ads inside ChatGPT. Add Google Ads to the mix and you have two ways to pay your way onto the page. So some business owners are quietly asking: can I stop paying for SEO now?
Short answer? No. Longer answer? Still no, but with receipts. Ads rent you a spot next to the answer. SEO earns you a place in it.
Why will neither ChatGPT Ads nor Google Ads can buy organic visibility, and how does your website affect how both perform, and which SEO steps help paid and organic pull in the same direction.

Ads Rent the Spot, SEO Earns It
ChatGPT Ads
OpenAI says ChatGPT ads are labelled, kept separate from the response and do not change what ChatGPT says. Your sponsored card can sit under the answer. The recommendation above it is another story.
Google Ads
Google keeps the same wall. Google’s John Mueller has said that ad rankings and search rankings run on completely separate systems, with essentially no real connection between them. Buying clicks does not buy rankings.
Caleb Shepard of The Digital Media Collective sums it up neatly: earn the answer before you buy the ad.
Your Website Does Double Duty
Google Ads looks at your landing page
Google’s Quality Score has three parts: expected click-through rate, ad relevance and landing page experience. A higher score means your ad and landing page are more relevant and useful to the searcher than other advertisers. Google adds that information from its crawlers may be used to assess ad quality. Sound familiar? That is SEO territory.
So does ChatGPT Ads
OpenAI’s OAI-AdsBot may visit the pages you submit as ads and use their content to decide when an ad is most relevant to show. A vague page makes for a vague ad, on both platforms.
The sale still happens on your site
OpenAI even tried putting checkout inside the chat, then pulled back so shoppers finish buying on the merchant’s own store. The ad gets the click. Your website closes the deal.
Practical SEO Steps for Both Platforms
Let the right crawlers in
OpenAI’s OAI-SearchBot decides whether your site can appear in ChatGPT’s search answers. Block it and you will not show up there. GPTBot, which collects training content, is a separate switch. Blocked every AI bot a while back? Time for a second look.
Build one page per offer
A focused page that matches your ad serves your Google landing page experience, gives ChatGPT Ads a clear signal and gives search engines something specific to rank. Three birds, one landing page.
Answer real questions
Write service pages and FAQs that answer what customers ask, with your prices, areas and details spelled out. A crawler cannot recommend what it cannot find.
Keep SEO running while you test
Shepard recommends treating ChatGPT Ads as a capped experiment alongside Google, Meta and email. Paid stops when the budget stops. Organic keeps working while you sleep.
Roots First, Then the Billboards
ChatGPT Ads and Google Ads put you in front of people at the moment they are deciding. SEO makes sure what they find is worth the click. Remember that rented spot? It pays off best when you also own the ground.
